A TIMPERLEY woman out doing her shopping has recounted her terror after armed machete wielding robbers attacked a supermarket today.

According to the unnamed woman, she was at the Tesco store in Baguley, Altrincham Road, when three men dressed in black walked into the store and started stealing cigarettes and attempting to steal money from a bureau de change.

Shoppers were held at bay for up to 15 minutes as the raiders ransacked the store.

She said: "At the time when these three walked in there must have been at least 200 people in the store. I was at the checkout paying for my goods when they started threatening members of staff and ordering them to hand over cash bags.

"They ordered us to be quiet and told us to get to the back of the store. The whole incident must have gone on for at least 10 minutes with no sign of any police.

The woman said she saw one female customer collapsed and an ambulance was called to assist her after the robbery.

Greater Manchester Police said the robbery occurred around 11.15am.

A spokesman explained: "Officers attended to find three masked men had entered the shop armed with weapons and, after stealing cash, they left in a waiting car.

He added: "No injuries have been reported and enquiries are ongoing."

A Tesco spokesman said, “This was clearly a traumatic event for everyone affected and we are very glad that no-one was injured. We will be assisting the police with their investigation.”

The woman added: "It was all very frightening and I was very shook up. I can't understand why a massive place like that has no security and they seemingly could not get a telephone line to contact the police.

"One member of staff was even asking a customer if she could borrow a phone to call them. However, it's an experience I don't ever want to re-live."
