BOWDON curate Myles Owen will abseil from St Mary’s Church tower this weekend to raise money for Middle East Christians facing persecution by Islamist terrorists.

Despite his fear of heights, Reverend Owen will join twenty of his parishioners to traverse the grade II listed landmark on Sunday.

The 29-year-old has organised the event in support of St George’s Church, Baghdad – the only remaining Anglican Church in Iraq.

The church and its vicar, Canon Andrew White, work across the region on behalf of those within the Christian community who have been persecuted for their faith – an increasing issue with the rise of ISIS in the north of the country.

Mosul, formally home to one of the world’s oldest Christian communities, is understood to have been completely rid of Christians by ISIS.

“We’re so comfortable here in the West that we don’t know what it is to suffer persecution or oppression because of our faith,” said Reverend Owen.

“It has become very difficult for Christians in Iraq.

“The work that Canon Andrew White does is just fantastic and I thought that we should raise money for all the good that is done out there.”
