SALE's poppy appeal was launched for 2014 after the Royal British Legion flag was raised over the Town Hall.

The Mayor of Trafford, Cllr. Ejaz Malik, raised the flag to signal the start of the appeal at weekend.

Representatives from the legion, along with staff and cadets from HMS Talisman and ATC 318 Sale Squadron were in attendance.

Mike Riley from from the Sale RBL branch, said the resident s in Sale were huge supporters of the appeal raising more than £26,000 year on year, to support the cause.

He explained: "Donations are vital to allow the work of the legion to continue. It provides medical, financial and general support to those members of the armed forces who suffer injuries whilst serving their country and to families of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice."

He added: "An ambitious target of £30,000 has been set and it is hoped that with the continued support of the people of Sale it can be reached in 2014."

A poppy shaped cake made for the launch by appeal volunteer Felicity Johnson, to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One, was later presented to the residents of Fiona Gardens in Sale.

Poppies are available to buy in many shops, banks, supermarkets, pubs and clubs all over Sale and Ashton-upon-Mersey.

In addition, a stall in Market Walk, close to W. H. Smith’s, on Saturday's and Wednesday's will stock small and large poppies, wreaths, wooden crosses, car badges, wristbands and bracelets.

The stall will also stock commemorative enamel pin badges marked 1914-2014; these are much sort after and will not be produced again.

The Annual Service of Remembrance will be held at the Sale War Memorial on Sunday, November 9, at 10.45am
