THE Sale Educational Foundation Foundation, which has supported students in higher education for more than 100 years, is changing the way it awards grants.

The body has been helping people of limited financial means from the Sale and Ashton on Mersey areas since 1909.

Cllr Barry Brotherton, chairman and secretary of the foundation said: “ This year the trustees have decided to make the awards in a different way. Instead of an award of £750 spread over three years, we now intend to make a single award payment of £1,000.

"This will enable the students to budget according to their own needs and will also simplify the administrative burden on the charity.

"The new arrangements will apply to students who have just started their first term at university."
