THE funeral arrangements have been announced for the son of Sir Matt Busby the late manager of Manchester United.

Sandy Busby, 78, died suddenly last Monday at his home

Busby junior was just nine years of age when his legendary father took over the reins in 1945 Old Trafford.

The 'Busby Babes' landed the FA Cup in 1948,1956 and 1957, before tragedy struck on a snowy Munich runway in 1958 as they returned from a European Cup match in Yugoslavia.

Sir Matt who lost eight of his players, was twice himself given the last rites but after returning to the dugout he quickly set about rebuilding from the devastation.

A 1963 FA Cup win was followed by 1965 and 1967 league titles before in 1968 the European Cup which many thought they would have lifted a decade before had the air crash not occurred.

After returning twice to the hot seat he became a director and later a president. Matt died aged 84 in 1994.

During his own life, son Sandy continued watching matches from his late father's seat.

Red's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward issued a statement after last week's news, saying he was saddened by his passing.

He explained: "Sandy was such a genuine person who had a deep and rich love for the club that his father did so much to establish in the hearts of millions around the world

"Sandy understood better than almost anyone what the Manchester United way means and his enthusiasm, his wit and his affection for the club will be sorely missed.

"Our thoughts go out to Irene and his family at such a sad time."

A requiem mass will be held on Friday(September 26), at 12pm, at Our Lady and St John's RC Church, High Lane, Chorlton, followed by private interment.

Family flowers only, but donations made payable to The Christie, can be sent to the funeral director Eamonn Kennedy, 390 Palatine Road, Northenden, M22 4FZ.
