THE son of a prominent Trafford artist is seeking to track down some of his late father's work so they can be used in a charity calendar.

George Allen was born in Warrington in 1910, but lived in Hale for most of his life and then in Bloomsbury Grove,Timperley, during his later years.

His son, Gordon Allen, who lives in Sandiway Place, Altrincham, inherited some of his father's paintings when he died in 1992, but said he is aware that his work was popular in South Manchester and is keen for anyone with any information to contact him.

Money raised will be donated to the Counselling and Family Centre, based in Altrincham, where Gordon's wife, Josephine, is a manager.

Gordon said: "He had always been interested in art and design and in his fifties he began dabbling in his own paintings.

"He later became more serious about his passion and eventually became a member of the Altrincham Society of Artists and remained an avid member of this group until his death.

"During this time his ability as a watercolour artist become more noticeable and during the last 20 years his paintings became very much in demand in America, the Americans being lovers of English country scenes."

Closer to home, George took inspiration for water colours and ink drawings from many Trafford landmarks, including Old Market Place ans Bowdon Church.

Some of George's Altrincham scenes were even turned into postcards and sold at Altrincham Tourist Board office.

Gordon considers his father's work to have been particularly popular 1975 to 1995 and aid Cheshire watercolour scenes were particularly popular with art enthusiasts in the area.

Gordon, who is a taxi driver, said if enough work is discovered and owners allow their painting to be used in the 12-scene calendar, money raised will go to a very worthy cause.

"The Counselling and Family Centre has been providing emotional and mental health support to local men women and children whatever the problem for nearly 40 years and like many charities, making ends meet is a job in itself."
