AN Urmston man dying from a cancerous tumour has completed the latest in a series of challenges he has set himself.

James McCarthy, 31, an avid Manchester United fan, who was given the devastating news in June, has set himself the challenges which include going to the grave of Duncan Edwards, visiting the Munich Air Crash memorial in Germany, meeting former Reds star Cristiano Ronaldo, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the Class of '92.

He completed his latest challenge recently meeting with United legends Paul Scholes and Gary Neville in Salford.

The former Class of '92 stars also took part in an Ice Bucket challenge to help raise money to help James complete the remaining challenges, which also include visiting Vietnam, DJing in Ibiza and going to the tomb of Christ.

The former Urmston Grammar School pupil's health problems started in 2009 folowing a car crash, after which he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

As a result, James had emergency surgery to remove the full frontal left lobe of his brain.

After once again learning to walk, talk, read and write, he underwent six weeks of radiotherapy, all the while still managing to attend kickboxing classes.

Despite his injuries, in September 2009, he undertook an honours degree in business management at Salford University, before embarking on his masters at the University of Manchester last September.

A fundraising team including mum Wendy, brother Daniel and friend Mathew Wilde have embarked on the series of fundraisers to help brave James see through the 'bucket list,' which ends at number 33 with 'meet everyone on the other side'.

Mathew, who has recently returned from an 89 mile in 80 hours walk from Carlisle to Newcastle along Hadrian's Wall, said: "Our feet are in bits but so far we have managed to raise more than £5,000 to help James complete his challenges.

The next big fundraiser will held at the John Alker Club, Flixton, on September 6, starting at 7pm with an appearance by Trafford's Frank Sinatra aka Wayne Devlin, an auction and raffles.

Tickets costing £5 can be purchased by going to jamesmccarthyfoundation.com.

Mathew explained: "It is amazing when you think how much James has achieved, particularly since his car accident and he is a shining example to us all.

"All the money will go towards James's bucket list and any remaining money, after James leaves us, will be donated to the Brain Tumour Trust."
