TRAFFORD executive councillors are 'delighted' following the announcement that Trafford Water Sports Centre, at Sale Water Park, is to remain open.

The council officially handed over the keys to Peak Pursuits Limited on August 1.

In November, the ruling Conservative group announced it was to cease funding watersports provision at the park, in a measure to save the cash-strapped local authority £1.1 million over six years.

Labour councillors strongly opposed the move and more than 3,000 people signed a petition in the hope of keeping the centre open.

But now, following a 'robust procurement exercise', Peak Pursuits will manage the provision of sport and leisure services at the centre, at no cost to the council.

Executive councillor for communities and partnerships, Cllr John Lamb, said: "The council is delighted to make this announcement as it recognises the enthusiasm and interest there is in water sports across the borough.

"It also reinforces the council's commitment to explore new ways of retaining services while also making necessary savings, a key theme of our Reshaping Trafford project.

"To see water sports activities at Trafford Water Sports Centre available for the communities of Trafford once more is something the council has been committed to achieving."

Cllr Lamb added: "Peak Pursuits is a company with considerable skills, experience and knowledge in this arena.

"They already operate four similar sized centres across the country and I am sure this will help as they work with local enthusiasts and groups to develop water sport activities in Trafford.”

Peak Pursuits Managing Director, Paul Ball said

“We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to manage and deliver activities at Trafford Water Sports Centre.

"This is an exciting development for Peak Pursuits.

"We look forward to becoming part of the local community and inspiring adults and children of all abilities to get active and make a splash."

Peak Pursuits will commence operating the water sports facilities by autumn 2014
