CATHERINE Russell fromAltrincham Grammar School for Girls, has been named Biology Teacher of the Year.

The award, run by the Society of Biology, recognises outstanding biology teaching inside and outside of the classroom.

Catherine said: “I am hugely honoured to have been chosen as Biology Teacher of the Year. Teaching biology is a fantastic career; young people are fascinated with the living world and they constantly amaze me with their questions and ideas.

"I am really proud that my students look forward to their biology lessons and always want to know more, regardless of the topic.”

The award includes prizes such as a tour of Darwin’s Beagle specimens and hands-on experience in a world class genetics lab supported by Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). There is a £500 cash prize for the winner and £500 of Oxford University Press resources for the winner's school,

Sue Howarth, chairman of the judging panel, said:“The judges were particularly impressed with her meticulously planned revision lesson where every student had a carefully considered role and misconceptions were skilfully corrected."
