AN Altrincham businessman is in the running to win £10,000 after being shortlisted for a top industry award.

Richard McConnell, who runs clothing alterations, repairs and tailoring franchise The Zip Yard on Lloyd Street in Altrincham, has made it to the finals of the British Franchise Association's HSBC Franchisee of the Year Awards.

He has been nominated in the Customer Service category, which recognises excellence in customer care and those that go above and beyond to deliver exemplary service.

The winners will be announced during a glitterinfg black-tie ceremony in Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday October 2.

The most outstanding franchisee will be crowned Franchisee of the Year at the awards and walk away with £10,000.

Category winners will also be announced, and will each receive £1,000.

Richard, who opened The Zip Yard franchise in September 2011, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be nominated for this award.

"It’s great to be recognised amongst the country’s leading franchisees for the second year running and I’m really looking forward to the awards ceremony in October.”

Brian Smart, Director General of the British Franchise Association, said: "This year the finalists excel in their sectors, demonstrating business drive and ambition.

"The shortlisted business men and women showcase the talent in franchising in the UK across a range of commerce, small and large.

"Their successes deserve to be championed, and we’re all looking forward to the judging process.”

Cathryn Hayes, Head of Franchising, HSBC, said: “We’ve been astounded by the sheer quality of entries for this year’s awards, now in their 25th year.

"We have seen excellent entries from a wide range of franchisees, varying in age, region, industries, and more.

"The refreshed categories have enabled us to recognise the hard work and talent of franchisees from different spheres of business, and we’re looking forward to learning more about them during the judging process."
