MOTORISTS and Metrolink passengers endured a day of travel disruption on Monday after a fault damaged the barriers at Navigation Road tram and train station in Altrincham.

The barriers were out of action until 2.45 the following morning. Metrolink passengers travelling to Navigation Road were forced to terminate their journeys a stop early at Timperley.

A spokesman for Network Rail said, “A fault with the barriers was reported earlier this morning. Engineers have been on site all day trying to fix the problem. We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. Network Rail apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.”

Network Rail is responsible for maintaining the barriers and a spokesman for Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM) said services were suspended for safety reasons.

"The advice I’ve had from the operator is that it was for safety reasons. In that area you’ve got trams and heavy rail both running along the tracks and we had reports from people on the ground that pedestrians were crossing the tracks while the barriers were down, which is dangerous."
