AN Altrincham nursery has been named ‘the best nursery school in the UK’, beating off thousands of other entries to win the coveted award.

Oakfield Nursery School, on Groby Road, was awarded the title at the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) Awards, which were held at Old Trafford Cricket ground on June 19.

Oakfield had already won the North of England heat of the competition, and was then chosen from five regional winners to be crowned overall champion.

Although an impressive achievement in itself, the family-owned nursery school actually made history, as it also won the Nursery Manager Today award in 2008, the only organisation to win both titles.

The NDNA Awards are voted for by parents and carers and acknowledge the work and care nurseries and practitioners provide to UK children and their families.

Roisin Moriarty, director of Oakfield Nursery School, which opened in 1968, said she and all her staff were thrilled to win the award.

Mrs Moriarty said: “All the staff work extremely hard and are delighted about winning the award.

“This is a wonderful achievement for both Oakfield and the North West of England.”
