Readers and councillors react to announcement that Trafford Council must cut additional £6 million from budget

Messenger Newspapers: Council leader, Cllr Sean Anstee Council leader, Cllr Sean Anstee

THE revelation that Trafford Council will need to cut an additional £6 million from its 2014/2015 budget has sparked fury among opposition councillors and readers.

The budget, which was already subject to cuts of £17 million, would now face a total of £23 million, in this financial year alone.

As the Tory controlled authority now looks to identify where the additional £6m cuts will be made, opposition councillors have called for an emergency meeting, to discover what other services might now be hit.

Labour leader Cllr Dave Acton said: "Despite this £6 million black-hole in the budget, no official report has been brought to members of council to outline why this has been allowed to happen, what the catastrophic causes of this were, what implications arise from this significant financial shortfall for the people of Trafford, and ultimately, which Conservative councillor will take responsibility for this total mismanagement of the budget.

"Serious questions have to be asked about why the Conservative leadership did not have financial checking systems in place to pick up such irregularities in spending patterns. This will result in further massive cuts to services for the people of Trafford and further council job losses."

Trafford Council told Messenger it was standing by last week’s statement from council leader Sean Anstee in which he said: “All expenditure is being legitimately incurred and social care is by far the largest area of spend within the council, of which we have a statutory duty to support.

“Options for doing this (making savings), are currently being formulated and will be considered by elected members in the coming months."

Meanwhile on our website 'Watching' said: "Bring in the district auditor to inspect the books, they can audit the year end closing balance without any problem, I have seen them at work they won’t miss a trick, the more they find the deeper they will investigate."

Rollockybill commented: “Typical Tory arrogance to blame it on the needs of the vulnerable. No apologies for their mismanagement. Forgive me if I am ever so slightly sceptical.”

In a letter, reader P Munro, from Urmston, said: "Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! When Cllr Acton seems to have forgotten the times, not so long ago, when Labour simply threw money – most of it we didn’t actually have – at every problem and always with only, at best, the most fleeting glance at whether or not we could actually afford what they wanted to achieve."

In a letter, Trafford’s Green party’s spokeswoman Margaret Westbrook said: “What Trafford residents and employees need is real change and an end to the unrelenting demolition of our public infrastructure. It’s our duty and our privilege to care for those who are the most vulnerable in our society.”

How about ensuring 100% collection of Council Tax this year and recovering all the unpaid tax from previous years

They do collect all of the council tax, if no payment is received ,then 6 weeks later the bailiffs "Jacobs" go around and demand payment or all of the items in the property are put in their white van.I know from experience and they collect the amount in cash in full! No if's or but's. This happened to me 2 years ago , after a dd failed. My fault I Agree, Jacobs are not people who like to talk about it more PAY or Fill the van!

I dont think the leaders should foot the blame for this, especially as the con leader has only been in the job a short while.

Somebody though who deals with accounts and forward planning has made a huge **** up.

Dont sack them, too many already unemployed, a mistake has been made , its in the open , lets move on.

The reality is the council is skint.

Stop putting your head in the sand , raise the council tax and make this borough proud of its self.

It used to be fantastic, shops were open, parking was free, roads were smooth, there were no speed humps, traffic wardens were only on tv programs, bins were emptied weekly, binmen used to collect the rubbish from inside your garden! Parks were well tended and cared for. People cared for each other, charity shops were virtually unheard off,The council appeared to care and talk to its residents.

Why has it all gone so badly wrong in David Camerons flagship council?

It's our money, we should be considered stakeholders and consulted. Instead we have a massively dysfunctional relationship with our council.

Priorities are shot and managers are on silly salaries. They have cut services but not management, many of whom are mysteriously away from their desks a shocking amount of the time. How many managers do you need for a half-empty office? The false economy there is that necessary services end up being contracted out resulting in costly and/or low quality provisions; and managers don't know how to account to the increasingly disgruntled citizens. Access Trafford might be well and good for a conversation but they can't do a thing.

So for every 2 personnel dropped one manager at the level above should go. That's how you make savings sensibly. We'd get far better services for our money!

The verges in Urmston and the overgrown grass along Broadway is already making the area look very run down. The Tories made a big thing of not raising Council Tax again (incidentally neither did Labour run Manchester) Personally I would rather have a slight increase in Council Tax and decent services. I do, however, object to providing fat cats at the top with their massive salaries, any job losses will not touch them. Make them accountable after all we pay their salaries.

Personally I'm considering leaving the area. All six Davyhulme councillors are Conservatives and I've found them completely useless myself. If they can't help their residents and they can't run the Council, what are they there for?

Reading the article again I am amazed that Cllr Anstee still cannot bring himself to apologise for this incompetence. I am sure the residents of this Borough would find honesty and humility a far more attractive quality than arrogance which translates as contempt for us ordinary mortals. We are not fooled by excuses and spin.

The only way forward in my opinion is for independent auditors to investigate this. It is not acceptable for this to be looked into 'in house'. This is OUR money and we deserve to know the truth and who is responsible. Remind me again, how much does the Chief Exec get paid?

Councillors Anstee and the very well paid Chief Executive should read Trafford's

"Our Customer Pledge" on Trafford's website. Accountability is mentioned! Also listening and responding to residents needs. Various promise that ring a bit hollow now.

Cllr Anstee works in a bank!
P'rhaps he's been taking maths classes with George Osborn who doesn't know 7 x 8

This is the funniest one-liner I've seen all year:

"Trafford Council is a well-performing, low-cost council delivering excellent services to make Trafford a great place to live, learn, work and relax. "

Haha!

Who says the Nasty Party don't have a sense of humour???!
