THE MP for Stretford and Urmston has called on Network Rail to address residents’ concerns after it removed a wall at Urmston Railway Station without consulting them.

Kate Green wrote to Network Rail in February but was disappointment with the rail operator’s response and criticised its lack of consultation with occupants of Walmsley Grove, who live directly behind the station.

Julie Bowling, who lives on Walmsley Grove, first wrote to Network Rail around two years ago to express concern that the wall dividing the street from the train station was crumbling, but Network Rail assured her the wall was safe.

However, some months later, the boundary wall was demolished and Network Rail replaced it with concrete blocks and fencing, without first informing residents.
When Ms Green asked if the fence could be replaced she was told ‘cost effective solutions’ had to take priority.

Ms Green said: “I’m disappointed that Network Rail didn’t consult local people about such a significant change to their surroundings.

“Walmsley Grove residents should have had their views considered and I’ve written again to the chief executive at Network Rail to ask for a proper explanation of why a consultation didn’t take place.”

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “The previous wall was damaged beyond repair and replaced with the fence which meets our commitments to be cost-efficient and to clearly mark the railway boundary.

“Under permitted development rights, we did not need to consult on the replacement fence which is designed to keep the railway as safe and secure as possible.

“There are ongoing safety campaigns to raise awareness of the dangers of trespassing on the railway and we encourage anyone to report any acts of trespass or vandalism they witness.”
