AN Urmston woman who made Spitfire engines during the Second World War turned 100 on Thursday, May 29.
Elsie Lees marked the occasion with family and friends.
Although now a widow, her husband worked as a steel worker for the same firm all his life and was in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the war.
Together they had five daughters, seven children and 12 great grandchildren.
Elsie is still very active for her age, enjoying afternoon tea with her daughters at Urmston Conservative Club every Tuesday and lunch every Thursday.
The centenarian was also a cake decorating enthusiast for 30 years and enjoys ‘chatting about the old times’ with family and friends.
Elsie described receiving her birthday telegram from the Queen as a ‘great feeling’ and attributed her longevity to ‘enjoying every minute of the day’.
