RSPCA inspectors got a shock yesterday when they received reports of a slithery new resident near Partington.
A passer-by spotted the python (pictured) in a country lane near before phoning the animal charity.
RSPCA inspector Lisa Lupson was called to the scene at 4.30pm on Tuesday and initially thought it would be a corn snake.
She said: “A member of the public stayed with the snake and it was found in quite a remote place.
“I couldn’t believe it once I realised it was a royal python.
“It was really tightly curled up and was quite frightened.”
Lisa checked if the snake, which appeared to be in a good condition, had any injuries before taking it to Crocodile Joes.
She added: “I’m not sure if it escaped or has been dumped but because of the remote location I think it’s probably been dumped.
“It’s the most unusual animal I’ve ever rescued in my eight years of service.”
