THE owner of an Altrincham-based gym chain is taking on an Ironman challenge to inspire his members to achieve their own health and fitness goals.

Jamie Cartwright, who operates women’s-only gym, Ladyzone, will undertake the gruelling feat in Pembrokeshire on September 14.

Cited by many as one of the toughest sporting events in the world, the challenge consists of a 2.4 mile open water swim, followed by a 112 mile cycle, and a 26.2 mile run.

Jamie said: “I’m 34 now and I will never train for anything as physically and mentally demanding as an Ironman.

“This will test everything I have to the absolute limit, and I want to prove to my members that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything.”

Jamie is completing the challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, after losing three of his grandparents to the disease, and hopes to raise £3,000.

A former footballer, Jamie has always had an interest in sport and fitness and recently completed a triathlon, which spurred him on to enter the Ironman.

He added: “When you embark on a physical challenge like this and begin to make the positive lifestyle changes that go with it, you end up inspiring those around you too.

“I am constantly amazed at what the Ladyzone members achieve, after so many of them come through the door facing all kinds of struggles.

“This challenge is both to pay tribute to their achievements, and to inspire others to reach their own goals.”
