AN application to build a bungalow on Green Belt land in Timperley was refused by Trafford planning chiefs.

The applicant had wanted to erect a detached bungalow on the L-shaped site, on the junction of Thorley Lane and Wood Lane, but the proposal was met with apprehension by councillors.

At a planning committee meeting on May 8, architect George Tsiantar argued that although the land is situated in the Green Belt, it is surrounded by development, including housing and a garden centre.

Cllr Mike Whetton expressed sympathy for the applicants and stated that he did not consider the site to be ‘sacrosanct’ Green Belt.

“It’s not as if we’re taking out swathes of forest or huge agricultural tracks, it’s a corner site that isn’t going to make any difference to the Green Belt.”

But other committee members disagreed, including Cllr Bernard Sharp, who said approving the application would set a ‘dangerous’ precedent as the Green Belt has to be protected.

All members except Cllr Whetton voted against the application.
