A QUARTET of St. Ambrose swimmers have carried off gold in both the Trafford Schools' Swimming Championships and the Greater Manchester Games for the first time winning across all the strokes in both galas.

From left to right, the winning team for Years 7 and 8 are: James Bennett who won the 50m freestyle; Raphael Quirk, 50 metres back; Connor Healy 50m butterfly and Matthew Johnstone 50m breast stroke.

St. Ambrose swimming coach Paula Chandler, said: “Since the opening of the new school and our 25 metre pool we have been able to run regular training sessions for every boy who wants to participate and it shows if you have the facilities you will breed champions.

"It is no coincidence that our younger age range are beginning to dominate the local school galas.”

St Ambrose has also excelled in the water polo winning with a gold and silver in the Trafford Schools' event at Years seven and eight, then picking up a bronze in the Greater Manchester Schools' Championships.

Mrs Chandler added: “This is our first medal in water polo and again shows the purpose and value of developing first class facilities. We have waiting lists for those wanting to compete in the squads, but try to ensure everyone has a competitive outing.”

All gold winners now qualify for the Nationals Schools' Championships later in the year.
