A NEW charge for developments has been introduced in the borough.

Trafford is the first authority in Greater Manchester to adopt a ‘community infrastructure levy’.

The charge will come into effect in Trafford on July 7.

Local authorities can set a financial levy on developments to fund a range of infrastructure projects. These include transport, flood defence, parks, recreational facilities and schools.

Council bosses say the levy rate will mean developers will know upfront exactly how much they will be expected to pay, enabling them to work out costs.

Councillor Michael Hyman, executive member for economic growth and prosperity, said: “We are excited to be the first authority in the area to introduce the levy. Its introduction will give developers greater certainty around planning charges and allow the council to prioritise funds towards infrastructure that is needed to support new homes and growth in the borough.
