NORTH Cestrian Grammar School in Trafford is holding an open day on Saturday, following its application for free school status.

Altrincham-based North Cestrian has bid for the new status from September 2015, which will enable it to open the doors to non-fee paying students.

Free schools were introduced by Education Secretary Michael Gove as part of education reforms.

They receive their payments directly from Government, but are not controlled by the local education authority.

Lee Bergin, headmaster at North Cestrian Grammar School, said: “We’re excited about the opportunity we have to provide the same high standard of independent grammar school education and pastoral care we’re known for, but without having to charge fees. We look forward to welcoming anyone interested in finding out more about us on Saturday.”

If North Cestrian is granted permission it will still be able to set its own extended curriculum, term dates and length of school day.

Its governing body will oversee and operate the school, but pupils will not have to sit an entrance exam. A decision is expected later this year on North Cestrian’s free school status application. If successful, the new status would take effect from September 2015 and existing pupils, along with those who attend in September 2014, will be guaranteed a place.

The open day takes place on March 1 from 10am to 3pm. For more information, visit www.ncgsfreeschgool.co.uk, call the school on 0161 928 1856 or email s.roby@ncgs.co.uk.
