THE Young Musicians of the Gulf Vocal Award 2014 has gone to a former Trafford school student.

Matias Goodwin, who attended Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, beat 115 competitors to win the 15th award which was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bahrain on January 30.

The 17-year-old relocated to Dubai with his family in 2011 and joined the Dubai English Speaking College (DESC), where he’s currently studying for his A-levels.

He took time out from studying to travel to Bahrain with teachers and students for the annual competition.

Students from around the Gulf who are Grade 8 music standard and whose schools are part of the British Schools of the Middle East are invited to participate, based on ability.

Emma-Jane Weighell, Head of Music at DESC, said: “Matias Goodwin’s performance is especially pleasing as it comes amidst his rehearsals for the forthcoming school production and his A-level studies.”
