HEALTH bosses have made a dramatic U-turn and agreed to stop the consultation on the closure of a mental health unit for elderly people at Trafford General Hospital.
A consultation to remove Trafford’s 21 mental health beds and relocate them to Woodlands Hospital, in Little Hulton, was launched by Greater Manchester West (GMW) trust on January 6, but Urmston councillor, Jo Harding, argued there was very little public awareness of the plans.
And yesterday Trafford's Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), in agreement with GMW, agreed to stop the consultation on the redesign of mental health services in the borough.
The leaders of all three political groups on Trafford Council have welcomed the decision.
The announcement follows an all-party agreement on a motion considered at last week's full council meeting, which sought reassurances around the level of public engagement, but also demanded an extension to the consultation period from March 30 to June 30.
All three group leaders were in agreement that this is good news for Trafford residents and reinforced that they would continue to work with Trafford CCG and GMW to ensure any future plans were fully consulted on and that they supported and met the needs of Trafford residents.
