WEARING distinguished olive green robes, the Aldermen and Burgesses of Altrincham Court Leet, founded in 1290, held their Hilary Assize at Altrincham Town Hall on Saturday, January 25.
The town crier, Peter Powell, announced the arrival of the provost, Denise Laver, resplendent in crimson.
The holders of posts such as chimney looker, recorder, bell man and pounder gave reports.
Alderman captain Michael Owen, ale taster, obviously enjoyed his task.
As well as sampling the ale at the Stamford Arms and finding it good, he had received a crate of 12 pints from the Tiger brewery in Singapore.
Having sampled 11 of them in two days he pronounced them wholesome for men and women.
Alderman Derek Pierce, constable, stated this was the 191st anniversary of the selling of a wife on the steps of Altrincham market cross. The first bid was for 8p but the selling price was, eventually, 18p!
In her role of market looker, the provost, Denise Laver, announced that since being taken over by market operations in September, the Sunday markets had proved popular.
She hoped the new, covered market place would open shortly.
Later she announced the Court Leet would present a silver lion to the Garrick Theatre to celebrate their centenary.
New freemen of the borough of Altrincham were presented with certificates and medallions.
They were: James A. Mangan, Bernard Dolan, John Fogel, Noel White, Jacqueline Campbell and Jessie Davies.
