THE Labour party recorded a very narrow victory in the Broadheath by-election.

Helen Boyle won the hotly contested seat with 1,377 votes, beating the Conservative candidate, Brenda Houraghan, who received 1,258 votes.

The UK Independence Party came third with 234 votes and, Liberal Democrats were fourth with 150 votes and the Green Party was fifth with 67 votes.

Turnout for the by-election – which was held following the death of Cllr Ken Weston – was very low at just 30 per cent.

Trafford's returning officer, Theresa Grant, confirmed the results of the closely-fought election late last night.

Helen Boyle will now represent Broadheath residents until she seeks re-election in 2015.

Following the announcement, Ms Grant extended the Council's congratulations to the Cllr Boyle and wished her well as she begins her term of office.
