Tribute to Flixton woman who twice won midwife of the year

Messenger Newspapers: Helen Bailey Helen Bailey

A FLIXTON woman who twice won a ‘midwife of the year’ award has died.

Helen Bailey, who was 53, died of breast cancer at Wythenshawe Hospital among family and colleagues on January 4.

She leaves behind her husband Steven, daughter Katie, 23 and twins David and Rose, 21.

Her sister, Julie Campion, said she felt the high grade midwife should be recognised for all ‘the wonderful work she did’ for her patients.

Helen worked at Trafford General Hospital for many years and later at Wythenshawe Hospital.

“People whose babies she’d delivered two years ago would come up to her and tell her how much she’d helped them, she was known as the lovely midwife,” said Julie.

Helen, who lived with her family on Beechwood Avenue, first developed breast cancer in 2008 but managed to recover and became ‘very strong’ on the issue according to Julie and thereafter was always encouraging other women to get screened.

However, the cancer returned in 2013 and she died at the beginning of 2014.

Julie said that while the entire family is ‘devastated’ by their loss, they have been overwhelmed by the glowing tributes they have received to Helen since her death.

“We were all with her when she died, even some of her colleagues,” said Julie.

“The amount of midwives who were coming over and telling us how wonderful she was, we were just completely astounded by the reaction.”

I've been so saddened to hear the news about Helen. I had my first baby last year and felt Helen's support throughout the whole pregnancy was brilliant. The follow up care and advice afterwards left a new mum feeling very well looked after. What a great loss.

I feel the same Baker81! What a wonderful and warm lady Helen was.... I also had a baby last year - first pregnancy - and Helen saw me many times throughout. Helen had the ability to make me feel as though I had known her for years, and each time I saw her she would reassure me and allay any fears I had as a new mum-to-be. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time - please be comforted that Helen was thought of very highly by her patients. Peace be with you xx

What sad news. Ditto both the previous comments. Both myself and my sister had babies last year and were lucky enough to have Helen as our midwife. We nicknamed her Helen the hero as she was so caring, understanding and knowledgeable. Nothing ever felt too trivial to ask and she did a great job at putting my mind at ease on a number of occasions. My thoughts are with her family. A truly wonderful woman x

I am so so sad to hear this news and have been in floods of tears since my sister told me. I am in total shock and cant believe it. Helen was an amazing midwife and a lovely woman. You cant put into words how valuable a midwife like Helen is when you are carrying around the most precious cargo. She went above and beyond the call of duty for me in my last pregnancy with Rocco..I felt like she was my personal midwife. I had her number from a previous pregnancy and this time she had to call me to follow up individual tests. She was a lovely ray of sunshine and helped me so much mdd at ease with the difficulties I ran into during my 3rd pregnancy. If a

I was so sad to read this news. Helen delivered our first baby in 2006 and was so patient with me the whole time. I never forgot her! Then on Christmas Eve 2011 when we called for a midwife to home deliver our baby boy Helen came and was once again amazing. She was proffesional, caring and patient helping me deliver the way I wanted to. She was with us all till Christmas Day early hours and returned Christmas morning to check on us both. Neither me nor my husband will forget her and we send our love to her family.
