FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Carrington Spur after a vehicle was reported to be on fire.

Two crews from Ashton under Lyne Fire Station, as well as crews from Stretford and Sale stations, were called to a section of the M60 between Junction 8 and Junction 9, at around 8.40pm on Saturday, January 11.

Upon arrival at the scene, crews found that the driver and passengers had been able to get out of the car – which was parked on the hard shoulder – unassisted.

The firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, were able to put out the blaze with a hose reel.

They then called for a gritter as it was feared the cold conditions would cause the water used to freeze over on the motorway carriageway.

The fire was found to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The incident was wrapped up in around 15 minutes.
