MULTIPLE police and fire units were called to a section of the Manchester Ship Canal after reports of a body in the water – which in fact turned out to be floating debris.
Crews from four fire stations including a boat crew were sent to the section close to Redclyffe Road, in Stretford, just before 8pm on Friday, January 3.
A police helicopter equipped with heat-seeking cameras was also sent to assist the search.
The search was called off after police and fire officers found that the item floating in the water was merely debris.
A spokesman Greater Manchester Police said: "There's no suggestion anybody has entered the water."
