A NEW fish and chip shop is to open at Stretford Mall, creating 12 jobs.

The man behind the new chippy, which will front on to Chester Road, believes the nation’s favourite supper is in his family’s DNA.

Nick Mylchreest, 49, is the fourth generation of his family to run a traditional fish and chip shop, with his great-grandmother starting the deep frying tradition in Cumbria just after the turn of the last century.

Marie Leaming was famous locally for supplying free hot meals to the families of miners during the General Strike of 1926.

All of the shops in Nick’s family have been called Milly’s after his great-grandmother’s original fish bar and that is the name he has proudly given to his new shop in the mall, which is due to open for business on January 29.

“I think I can say I have fish and chips in my DNA as I am the fourth generation of my family to be involved in the business, said Nick.

“I worked in the two shops, which were both called Milly’s, with my mum from the age of 16 to 21 but I later went into the insurance business and was an agent for one of the major companies for many years.

“When the children grew up I decided it was time for me to return to my first love of fish and chips and I started looking around for suitable premises.

“After a long search I decided on Stretford Mall, and that was for a number of reasons. It’s got good footfall, has light industry opposite, housing estates either side and is close to the main Chester Road.”

The new shop will be open seven days a week, for more information visit stretfordmall.com.
