STUDENTS at an Altrincham school have helped to raise £50,000 for The Christie Hospital in memory of a former pupil.

Chadwick Mulholland was a student at Altrincham Grammar for Boys when he lost his battle with cancer in 2008.

Shortly after Chad passed away, his family teamed up with the school and set up Chads Challenges to raise much needed funds for The Young Oncology Unit.

The generous fundraising effort from Chads Challenges means that when the new Young Oncology Unit at The Christie reopens in January there will be a permanenet plaque unveiled in Chad’s memory.

Gill Williamson, Aspirations Coordinator at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, said that Chads Challenges was set up for anyone wanting to challenge themselves and have fun at the same time.

She said: “This is a great achievement for everyone involved, but for us the key thing about Chads Challenges is that people are having fun and raising money.”

“Even if we only raise £50 at an event, it’s a chance for pupils to meet people and have a laugh.”

In the Past six months, the school has made huge efforts to hit their fundraising target before Christmas, so they teamed up with other local organisations to organise a number of events.

In addition to the school’s annual summer tea party there has been a schoolwide own-clothes day and a fitness bleep test for teachers.

Gill added: “So many other people from the surrounding area have combined to help raise money in the community and make this wonderful achievement possible.”
