THE new manager of Altrincham Market wants Messenger readers to help name one of its important parts.

Nick Johnson, who heads Market Operations which now runs the market, is asking residents to suggest a new name for what is currently the Lower Market.

Mr Johnson said the historic area is set to become a ‘vitally important brand new market square’, following its £300,000 transformation.

The Lower Market will be ready in January and will be the new home to many of the markets familiar faces.

Trafford Council officially signed control of the market over to Market Operations at an official signing on December 6, following a tendering process which began in April.

Mr Johnson said: “The public are the life and soul of the market so it’s only right that they should have a part in choosing the new name.

“This area is steeped in history and vital in putting the existing traders at the heart of the town and the heart of all the changes rather than being on the edge.

“I know we have a very creative community here in Trafford and I can’t wait to hear their suggestions.”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Matt Colledge, said: “The competition is a fantastic chance for the public to have a say in the future of the market.

He added: “I’m looking forward to seeing Nick’s ideas for the market come to fruition and Altrincham Forward will be working very closely with him as the redevelopment of the Market House gets under way.

"The future looks bright for Altrincham!”

• Competition entries can be submitted in person to Altrincham Forward at their office on Shaws Road, emailed to Altrincham.forward@trafford.gov.uk or sent via Twitter @AltrinchamFWD. The deadline is January 10 when the winner will be selected by a panel of experts and presented with a £150 market voucher.
