TRAFFORD MPs and council leader have paid tribute to one of the world’s greatest statesmen.

Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, died last Thursday at the age of 95.

Graham Brady, MP for Altrincham and Sale West said: “A man of peace and great dignity, he will be much missed.”

The death of the renowned and highly respected leader has attracted a deluge of tributes from around the world.

Paul Goggins MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East said: “Nelson Mandela was the greatest political leader of my lifetime. He brought justice and democracy to South Africa and showed the world that reconciliation is a better way than conflict.”

Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, said: “Nelson Mandela was a hugely significant figure in our lifetime. The whole world will mourn his death and celebrate his life.”

As a mark of respect flags at police stations across Greater Manchester were flown at half mast on Friday.

Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester’s Police Commissioner, said:“Flags are being lowered at police stations across Greater Manchester as a mark of respect, remembering and celebrating the life and legacy of one of the true giants of modern times – Nelson Mandela.Nelson Mandela brought hope to millions.”

Trafford residents can also pay tribute to the legendary Nelson Mandela by signing one of two books of condolence. There are two books available - one at Sale Waterside and one at Trafford Town Hall.

Council leader Matt Colledge said: “Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to millions across the world. He was a unique man of great vision and tremendous reconciliation, which he retained throughout. Our thoughts are with not only his family, but with the people of South Africa.”
