TRAFFORD’S MPs have offered their thoughts on the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement.

Perhaps unsurprisingly considering their political leanings, Graham Brady and Kate Green had very different thoughts on George Osborne’s economic forecast.

Altrincham and Sale West MP, Graham Brady, welcomed the Mr Osborne’s decision to double the amount that people can pay into workplace schemes.

Mr Brady said: “I have been calling on the Government to increase the amount that workers could contribute to these schemes for several years. If an employee has a stake in their own company it improves performance and gives them an incentive to achieve.

“For too long, the amount which could be invested was set at a very low level. I asked Parliamentary questions regarding the limit imposed and I am very glad that the Chancellor has taken this positive step.

“Building on the shares given to Royal Mail employees, I hope this indicates a renewed commitment to wider share ownership – especially for employees.”

However, Stretford and Urmston MP, Kate Green, criticised the Government’s decision to give tax breaks to married couples.

Ms Green said: “Families struggling to make ends meet will find it difficult to credit Osborne’s claim that the economy is on the mend.

“Working people are on average £1,600 worse off under this government, prices have risen faster than earnings in 40 of the last 41 months, yet the Chancellor still finds £700 million to hand out in tax breaks for married couples.

“Some of the poorest children are growing up in lone parent households, they certainly didn't get to choose their family circumstances, but their families won't see a penny of Osborne’s tax break.

“Surely the Chancellor could find a better and fairer way to spend £700 million?”
