A TREE has fallen down on the border of Stretford and Chorlton.

Strong winds have blown down the ash tree onto a property on Wilbraham Road, destroying a garden wall and a Ford Focus.

Tree surgeon Ashley Glennon, who happened to be driving past the incident, said the tree was around 50 to 80 years old and had a substantial amount of root decay.

Ashley, of Ash Tree Surgeons, said: "It would be almost impossible to determine this problem due to the roots being hidden.

"It’s never nice when these things happen especially when it involves damage to buildings but most importantly passing public.

Ben Fountain, whose house and car were hit by the tree, saw the tree fall in front of his eyes.

“I like to take a sabbatical around lunch time and on my walk I saw a lady who said ‘we’re walking fast because we don’t want to be hit by a tree’.

“And sure enough as I turned the corner I heard this all mighty bang and I saw a tree fall down in my driveway.”

Ben said his car is very likely going to be written off as a result and his neighbour’s car has also been damaged.
