COUNCILLORS have expressed their delight that plans to revitalise Altrincham Market are coming to fruition.

Proposals to convert the historic market hall into a ‘mixed use market, performance and function venue’, were passed unanimously by councillors at a planning committee meeting on November 14.

A range of proposed refurbishments including restoration of the old toilet block, installation of traditional but, more secure market stalls, replacement of floors and internal redecoration to brighten the market space, are now set to take place.

Further adaptations include the erection of a glazed canopy on the Shaws Road elevation of the building as well as emergency lighting and a new security system.

A council spokesman said: “It’s an exciting time in Altrincham with the historic market set to be transformed by Trafford Council as part of its commitment to working alongside Altrincham Forward to realise the vision for this quarter of the town.

“The scheme will regenerate the historic market and re-establish it as the heart of the town centre and as a focal point for local people, shoppers and visitors.”

Following a tendering exercise in April, operational management of the market passed to Market Operations, which has already began to implement changes, such as a hand-made vintage market and weekly Christmas markets during the festive season.

Welcoming proposals, Cllr Phil Gratrix said: “I can only welcome this, it’s just a good news story.

“This will certainly bring a vibrancy to this particular area because it does look a bit sad around there.”

Cllr Rob Chilton agreed: “I also fully support this application, I’m very pleased to see how this project and aspects of this building have well and truly been born in mind by this applicant.”

Leader of Trafford Council, Cllr Matt Colledge, said: “Transforming Altrincham’s historic market complex into a vibrant community hub for shoppers, local people and visitors is an exciting prospect and an important component of Altrincham Forward’s vision for the town.

“It will play a key role in revitalising Altrincham, help attract new investment and will be great for local businesses in the area.”

Nick Johnson, of Market Operations, said: “We are excited at the opportunity to restore the market to its former historic glory.

“The proposals will not only revitalise the market but will breathe new life into the town and add to its heritage.

“It will be a great boost for existing stallholders, some of whom have been trading there for over 40 years and it will allow us to attract new businesses into this fantastic, prime time new space which is closer to town and opposite Marks and Spencers.

“I have great ambitions to really put Altrincham Market back on the map.”
