Frank Sidebottom statue - unveiling date announced
THE waiting is finally over.
The statue created in honour of comedy legend Frank Sidebottom will be unveiled in Timperley Village on October 20.
Councillor Neil Taylor, a spokesman for the fundraising campaign, said it will be an unveiling with a difference - in keeping with the much loved character’s quirky take on life.
He also thanked the fans for the support they have given the project and the fact that an unlikely hero is to have a lasting memorial.
Neil said: “What’s made this so special is that it’s to celebrate the life of an ordinary person - a cult figure. It’s unusual for somebody who is not rich and famous to be cast in bronze and it’s cost the taxpayer no money, it’s cost the ratepayer no money. It’s funded by fans 100 per cent - it’s for the love of Frank.”
Neil said Paulina Skavova, the artist responsible for immortalising the much loved funnyman in bronze, will fly in from the Czech Republic to attend the event. It will take place at 11.37am.
Frank Sidebottom was the creation of Chris Sievey, who died of cancer three years ago and Neil said any money left over from the fundraising campaign will go to the charity Marie Curie Cancer Care.
He added: “What I’m advising fans to do is to carry on donating because we’re supporting such a worthy cause.”
