ARSONISTS caused £18,000 worth of damage after setting fire to an outbuilding at Ashton on Mersey Cricket Club.
Club committee members were alerted to the blaze at around 8am on September 11, and found that an outbuilding which served as a garage and scoreboard had been destroyed.
The building contained two ride on mowers, a bowling machine and other equipment were destroyed in the blaze, along with the building itself.
Crews from Stretford and Sale fire stations attended and put out what remained of the fire. Firefighters estimate that the fire was started at around 1am.
Club secretary, Mark Robinson, said: “People responsible tend to ‘brag’ about things like this and we are keen to generate publicity in a bid to catch the culprits.
“It’ll cost around £18,000 to replace the equipment lost in the fire, in addition to cost of the building itself which is likely to be around another £12,000.”
Inspector Laura Burgess, from South Trafford INPT, said: "The police take all incidents of criminal damage and arson very seriously and we are investigating this particular incident .
"If anyone can assist us in any way I would urge them to come forward and do so.
"These are dangerous incidents and a significant amount of damage has also been caused."
Police have been informed and enquiries are ongoing, anyone with information is asked to call 101.
