New Altrincham Market owner outlines plans for traditional market with modern twist
THE new owner of Altrincham Market has outlined his bold plans for the future.
Nick Johnson, who runs Market Operations with partner Jenny Thompson and Gail Titchener, intends to create a ‘traditional market with a thoroughly modern twist’ – such as high quality street food and being able to pay by card.
Nick said that while Market Operations is a new company, he and Jenny ran Atlas Bar in central Manchester between 1990 and 2000 and they also owned a delicatessen, so they know a thing or two about sourcing local produce and hosting unique events.
“We were running Atlas when Manchester was in its heyday, with the Hacienda and all of that, and we were doing some really interesting things,” said Nick.
Nick, who has lived in Altrincham for 20 years, said he and Jenny looked at Altrincham Market and came to the realisation that they could create something special, while celebrating what already exists.
“It’s going to encompass a whole breadth of food culture, vintage fashion and music, home and garden,” said Nick.
“It’s going to be about independent businesses doing interesting things and selling stuff that you can’t find anywhere else.
“We’ve got long-standing roots in Manchester and Altrincham so we want to bring the two together and hopefully create something credible.”
Market-goers can expect change very quickly, with a hand-made vintage market, on September 15 and weekly Christmas markets from November.
Then from Spring 2014, when improvements to the market have been completed, Sunday markets will run each weekend running along four themes: ‘food, farm and makers’, ‘vintage fashion, vintage furniture and vinyl’, ‘handmade and producers’ and ‘home house and garden’.
