AN ALTRINCHAM student is taking her gender equality campaign national.

Jinan Younis, 18, was inundated with media attention after writing about the problems she faced establishing a feminism society at her school, and appeared on Woman's Hour to discuss gender equality.

Now she is working with a national organisation to help set up similar societies across the country.

Jinan has formed a partnership with UK Feminista to get schools to sign the ‘Schools Against Sexism’ pledge and encouraging them to set up their own feminism societies.

She has also worked with the organisation to produce a photo project called ‘Feminism Belongs in Schools’.

The student, of Briony Avenue, Hale Barns, has lived in the area for 13 years and attended Altrincham Grammar School for Girls.

In February students in the school’s sixth form set up a feminism society in order to discuss issues relating to gender equality.

Jinan attracted national attention after writing an article for the Guardian about the hostility she and her classmates received from their male peers and the problems they experienced setting up and maintaining the society at the school.

Jinan, who will be starting at Cambridge University in October, said: “Since the article came out we’ve had lots of requests from both teachers and students to help them do the same in their schools.

“I’m definitely going to continue the campaign in Cambridge and work with schools around there.”

Tanya O'Carroll, 25, from Oxford, an activist who set up the project with Jinan and UK Feminista, said: "It's about gender being included across the curriculum.

“Jinan is really taking a leadership role and she's relatable to other students.

“We've got 20 volunteers at the moment and we're really hoping to expand the network to include as many schools as possible."
