A COUPLE from Sale who lost their 12-year-old son to non-Hodgkin lymphoma have raised nearly £100,000 to fund research into finding a cure.

Nicola and Dave Hulme set up the Alex Hulme Foundation just a month after their son lost his six month battle with cancer.

Alex Hulme was diagnosed with B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in March 2011 and although his treatment worked well in the early stages the cancer returned in late June and he passed away in September 2011.

Donations now total £95,000 and the couple hope to break through the £100,000 barrier on Friday, May 10 with a fundraising event at Newton Ward Conservative Club in Hyde.

Funds from the charity are being used to finance research carried out by Dr Suzanne Turner, the only Paediatric Lymphoma Researcher in the UK.

Dr Turner said: “It has been an eventful year and whilst research progresses at a steady pace we have achieved much.

“Most notably we now have a formal link with the imminent world-wide paediatric B-NHL clinical trial.

“There has not been a paediatric clinical trial of this nature for over 10 years and so our involvement is a monumental occasion and we should be recruiting the first children in the UK very soon.”

On Saturday, July 6 the foundation will stage its annual ball at the Worsley Park Hotel and Country Club. Tickets cost £35 per person, for more information visit alexhulmefoundation.co.uk.
