A PET cat saved a Timperley man from a potentially life-threatening fire at his home.

Crews from Altrincham, Sale and Wythenshawe fire stations were called to the house on Henley Drive at 5.40am on Monday (May 6).

The 54-year-old occupant was asleep in an upstairs bedroom when his cat jumped onto his bed and alerted him to the blaze.

He managed to get out of the house before firefighters arrived, but the building was completely destroyed by the fire.

He was treated at the scene by a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) trauma technician, as he was suffering from smoke inhalation and had burns to his head and was then taken to hospital, where he remains.

The cat died in the blaze.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus put the fire out with water jets, while an aerial appliance brought in from Stretford Fire Station tackled the blaze from above.

Altrincham station manager Kevin Brogden said: “The man involved in this fire was incredibly lucky to make it out and we hope he recovers from his ordeal quickly.

“While he had a smoke alarm, it was positioned in the garage and he could’ve had an earlier warning to the fire if they had been positioned elsewhere in the house.

“Our firefighters worked tirelessly at the scene yesterday morning to bring the fire under control and they’ve been here since to make sure it’s fully out.”

Fire authority chairman, Cllr David Acton, said: “Our firefighters have put more than 24 hours into tackling this blaze – but their work will not stop there.

“Crews are now going to do as much as possible in this community to try and make sure that no one else suffers in the same way.”
