ORGANISERS of the Beatles in Urmston concert are  celebrating after the council gave its backing to their plans.

Chief organiser, Peter Killick, said: “We are delighted that our hometown has opportunity to celebrate this musically historic event.”

Peter and his team’s first application to Trafford Council was rejected, but after considerable changes – including a reduction in capacity, nights and earlier closing times – the council gave the submission the green light on Tuesday.

The organisers now just have to undergo the final stage of the approval process – a meeting with key stakeholders, such as the police and the fire service.

”The intense work doesn't start here but it certainly continues apace from this moment on,” said Peter.

Tickets are not yet available for the two-day concert, which is to take place on August 10 and 11, but Peter hopes to have them printed imminently.

The date was chosen to mark 50 years since the Beatles played at the Urmston show in Abbbotsfield Park, an appearance which is cemented in Trafford folklore.

Popular 1960s bands the Tremeloes and Herman’s Hermits are confirmed to be appearing at the event, although the Hermits will be minus their front man Peter Noone, despite efforts from Peter, as well as high-profile tribute band, the Bootleg Beatles.

Urmston groups including the Rainband, who have been confirmed to play at Glastonbury this year, will also be appearing, along with the Quangos, Small Weller and Midnight Delta.

A council spokesman said: “Following a meeting of the major events review panel on Tuesday 16th April, Trafford Council gave in principal approval for an event application to hold a Beatles 50th Anniversary at Abbotsfield Park in Urmston this August.

“The application will now move to the second stage of the approval process which involves consultation with key stakeholders during a multi-agency phase.”
