PARALYMPIC swimmer Claire Cashmore launched Greater Manchester’s first ever Healthier Catering Awards at the Trafford Centre.

Research shows that consumers would like to have healthier options when they eat out.

These awards, which recognise caterers who meet certain standards, make it easier for customers to choose healthier and safer food, helping to curb rising levels of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Paralympian Claire said: "I am absolutely thrilled to present these awards. As an athlete, my food is my fuel and if I ate junk food, I would simply not be able to perform.

"I love eating out and these awards will make it easier for me to make healthier choices when I’m out and about with Team GB or my family and friends."

Abdul Razzaq, director of public health for Trafford added: "Today we have recognised a range of businesses who have gained either the commitment, achievement or excellence level of these Awards.

"Caterers have recognised the potential to offer healthier food and drink, so these awards are expected to become a coveted badge of excellence, which will ultimately be great for both business and customers."

The recipients received a certificate, window sticker and a listing on the Greater Manchester Healthier Catering Award website: www.healthiercatering.co.uk.

The award recipients were…Excellence - Oxford Street Fish and Chips (Stalybridge), Puccini (Tameside) Delicious at the Fusilier (Bury).

Achievement - Creation Café (Salford), the Mighty Bite (Ashton under Lyne).

Commitment - Saffran (Trafford Centre), Starving Man (Altrincham), Starving Mermaid (Altrincham).

Gordon McKinnon, INTU Regional Director from the Trafford Centre, who hosted the launch, concluded: “We are well aware that many consumers relish having healthier options on a menu, and this award recognises and promotes that choice, so we were delighted to be asked to host the launch and hope to see it go from strength to strength across Greater Manchester.”
