URMSTON group the Rainband will be playing Glastonbury 2013 - alongside the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Arctic Monkeys.

The Rainband received a phone call from one of the music festival’s organisers, Emily Eavis, asking the band to play at this years event.

Lead singer, Martin Finnigan, said:”We’ve had some unforgettable moments in this band in the last year, touring with the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs and in Europe with Simple Minds but this really feels on a different level.”

He added: “Every musician when they get into a band dreams of playing Glastonbury, so to be asked to play it is something very special.”

The band was brought to the festival’s attention following the success of their latest single which reached number nine in the UK independent top 40 singles and number five in the Italian download charts.

The single was a tribute to the Italian MotoGP world champion Marco Simoncelli who died following an accident at the Malaysian Grand Prix, October 2011.

The single raised over £25,000 for the Marco Simoncelli Foundation which Marco’s father set up in his name.

The band was formed in 2009 by lead singer Martin Finnigan and guitarist Phill Rainey, followed by drummer Stefan Irlam and bassist Joe Wilson.

All four band members were born in and still live in Urmston.

The Rainband have spent the past three months recording their debut album “Thoughts and Images” which is out in October.

The band will play Glastonbury on June 28.
