A BODY found in the River Mersey is believed to be that of missing Sale man, Neil Marsom.

The body was recovered by Under Water Search Unit (UWSU) officers from a stretch of water close to the Waterside Hotel in Cheadle, at around 3.10pm yesterday.

Tests to formally identify the body are ongoing, but police believe it to be Mr Marsom and have informed his family.

The 38-year-old was last seen struggling in the River Goyt near Bredbury, Stockport, on January 3, by members of the UWSU who were searching for the then missing Michael Simpson.

The officers, who had been alerted to the man’s presence in the water at 12.40pm, made efforts to save him, but he was carried away by the fast-moving current.

Police had been trying to find him since that time.

Mr Marsom had been dropped off in Hazel Grove by his mother at 11am on January 3, two hours before he was seen in the river.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.
