Report shows the commute into Manchester is making motorists miserable
5:30pm Sunday 24th February 2013 in News
Only 15 per cent of Manchester’s drivers enjoy their commute to work.
THE daily commute is sapping the spark out of Manchester’s drivers as they spend the equivalent of more than four days behind the wheel each year.
Commuters are clocking up 7,367 miles on the roads which is the equivalent of nearly driving to New York and back according to a new report.
Only 15 per cent of Manchester’s drivers enjoy their commute and three quarters (70 per cent) are miserable about congestion and the state of the UK’s roads. A fifth of drivers (18 per cent) long for better driving from their fellow commuters.
Jon Lott, of Allianz Your Cover Insurance said: “We are launching this research to reveal how commuters feel about their daily drive to and from work.”
“Manchester commuters are spending nearly an hour a day commuting and more than half (62 per cent) are frazzled before even arriving at work, feeling rushed, stressed and anxious from their morning journey, which is isn’t a good way to start the working day.”
Bringing costs down would rev up Manchester’s commuters’ feelings towards their daily journey as almost half of drivers (45 per cent) said cheaper fuel would improve it.
Destination is also key for Manchester commuters’ feelings as one in 10 of commuters wish for a better job to improve their daily drive.
Manchester commuters admit to craving car companionship as six per cent would have a better start to the day by having someone to share their journey with. If commuters did car-share more this in turn could lead to a more environmentally-friendly driving-force.
The Mamchester experience compares badly with other cities. When it comes to the British commute, Northampton is in pole position as the top commuting city with three quarters of drivers enjoying their daily journey while just a third in Coventry are being driven round the bend by their commute.
The report was compiled by Allianz Your Cover Insurance.

Cheaper fuel does not make for a better commute. Better parking facilities at the other end for a sensible price is more likely to make people feel better about driving into Manchester. I did it for about a year though that was ten years ago. I preferred it to the fight to get on the Metro and the people who make you feel happy you can afford to drive in. There is no pleasure in public transport.
