POLICE have renewed their plea for information to help solve the murder of Halton McCollin, five years since the promising footballer was shot and killed in a Stretford takeaway.

The 20-year-old was shot once as he stood in China Garden takeaway on Chester Road, on January 19 2008.

He died in hospital two days later.

A £50,000 reward remains on offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Halton’s killers.

A man, who was 20-years-old at the time, was jailed for six years for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life in 2008 when the murder weapon was found at a house in East Didsbury.

However, no one has yet been charged with Halton’s murder.

Police are keen to trace three masked men who were seen to approach the Chester Road takeaway before one of them opened fire on Halton and his friends.

Det Ch Insp Pete Jackson said: “He was an honest and decent young man and his tragic death left his family and friends devastated.

“The pain his family feel now is just the same as it was back in 2008 and understandably they have found it difficult to move on with their lives.

“We are continuing to appeal for information to help solve this case. I firmly believe that there will be people out there who know who is responsible for Halton's murder and who will have information about the case.

“Five years is a long time and people's circumstances change.

“Those who know something and did not want to talk to us before may have had a change of heart and I would urge those people to come forward now and to do the right thing.”

He added that any information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence and identities can be protected.

Anyone with information is asked to call Greater Manchester Police Major Incident Team on 0161 856 3691, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
