THE New Year got off to a particularly happy start for 25 excited youngsters who graded successfully at Hale Karate Club at the end of last year.

The students, all beginners last September, rose to the challenge set by chief examiner and head of Kenshikan England Karate Paul Ferris.

Martin Cockx, instructor at the club said: ‘All the students worked very hard. To show such commitment and ability after a short period of training speaks volumes as to the standards we have aimed for and, achieved.”

Hale Karate Club started opened its doors last September and is already part of the landscape at The Grammar leisure centre at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys.

I'd be interested to know how many of these places "give out" the belts to keep the kids interested and how much it costs per test? The problem with karate is there are so many places that do different types and there is no single defined version that's why the Olympics don't have it and that is also why you get folks setting themselves up as instructors handing out belts that aren't recognized elsewhere. I'm not suggesting this guy is doing this.

Taekwondo or judo is your best bet for competitions.

cost for training could be anything from £5 to £10, grades are important to show where your at but again that costs then you have the membership then the kit and with experience many martial arts clubs do not teach reality so they get there black belts after spending a bloody fortune all them years thinking they will be ok in an altercation and then freeze ,many wont be able to do them fancy kicks the stance is all wrong more so in karate, always train for reality and forget the sport aspect =)
