“The families of both Michael Simpson and Neil Marsom have been informed of this development and specially trained officers are in regular contact with them.”

Mr Marsom, 38, has not been seen since he was dropped off in Hazel Grove, Stockport, at 11am on January 3.

Two hours later, officers from an underwater search team came across him struggling in the river at around 12.40pm, while carrying out a search in relation to a separate investigation.

The officers made efforts to pull Mr Marsom from the river, but he became submerged and was carried downstream in the fast moving water.
