9:00am Wednesday 2nd January 2013 in News
FOOTBALLER John Bennett failed a breath test after being pulled up for going through a red light in the early hours of the morning.
Bennett, 21, who plays for Winsford United in the North West Counties league, was given a 12 month driving ban and fined £280 by Manchester magistrates.
The court heard he had been stopped on Flixton Road, Partington, driving home from a family party at 2am on October 26.
Bennett, an apprentice electrician, of Moss Lane, Partington, admitted driving while one and a half times above the limit. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and £28 victim surcharge.
Neville Warburton, defending, said Bennett was a keen sportsman and didn’t normally drink.
“This was totally alien to him and he is full of remorse” added Mr Warburton.
In court Bennett claimed he had only had a “couple of drinks”.
“I became ill and decided to go home and I felt ok to drive”, he said.
